Psalm 119:137-144; Habakkuk 1:5-17; 2 Peter 1:1-11
(Revised Common Lectionary Year C)
(Semi-continuous Reading Plan)

(Grant me understanding)
137 You are righteous, O Lord,
       and your judgments are right.
138 You have appointed your decrees in righteousness
       and in all faithfulness.
139 My zeal consumes me
       because my foes forget your words.
140 Your promise is well tried,
       and your servant loves it.
141 I am small and despised,
       yet I do not forget your precepts.
142 Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness,
       and your law is the truth.
143 Trouble and anguish have come upon me,
       but your commandments are my delight.
144 Your decrees are righteous forever;
       give me understanding that I may live.

(The wicked swallow the righteous)
5  Look at the nations, and see!
     Be astonished! Be astounded!
   For a work is being done in your days
     that you would not believe if you were told.
6  For I am rousing the Chaldeans,
     that fierce and impetuous nation,
   who march through the breadth of the earth
     to seize dwellings not their own.
7  Dread and fearsome are they;
     their justice and dignity proceed from themselves.
8  Their horses are swifter than leopards,
     more menacing than wolves at dusk;
     their horses charge.
   Their horsemen come from far away;
     they fly like an eagle swift to devour.
9  They all come for violence,
     with faces pressing forward;
     they gather captives like sand.
10 At kings they scoff,
     and of rulers they make sport.
   They laugh at every fortress,
     and heap up earth to take it.
11 Then they sweep by like the wind;
     they transgress and become guilty;
     their own might is their god!

12 Are you not from of old,
     O Lord my God, my Holy One?
     You shall not die.
   O Lord, you have marked them for judgment;
     and you, O Rock, have established them for
         punishment.
13 Your eyes are too pure to behold evil,
     and you cannot look on wrongdoing;
   why do you look on the treacherous,
     and are silent when the wicked swallow
     those more righteous than they?
14 You have made people like the fish of the sea,
     like crawling things that have no ruler.

15 The enemy brings all of them up with a hook;
     he drags them out with his net,
   he gathers them in his seine;
     so he rejoices and exults.
16 Therefore he sacrifices to his net
     and makes offerings to his seine;
   for by them his portion is lavish,
     and his food is rich.
17 Is he then to keep on emptying his net,
     and destroying nations without mercy?

(Participants of the divine nature)
Salutation
1:1 Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ,

To those who have received a faith as precious as ours through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:

2 May grace and peace be yours in abundance in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

The Christian’s Call and Election
3 His divine power has given us everything needed for life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Thus he has given us, through these things, his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may escape from the corruption that is in the world because of lust, and may become participants of the divine nature. 5 For this very reason, you must make every effort to support your faith with goodness, and goodness with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with endurance, and endurance with godliness, 7 and godliness with mutual affection, and mutual affection with love. 8 For if these things are yours and are increasing among you, they keep you from being ineffective and unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For anyone who lacks these things is short-sighted and blind, and is forgetful of the cleansing of past sins. 10 Therefore, brothers and sisters, be all the more eager to confirm your call and election, for if you do this, you will never stumble. 11 For in this way, entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be richly provided for you.

The Daily Lectionary is a three year cyclical lectionary. We are currently in Year C. Beginning with the first Sunday of Advent in 2022, we will be in Year A. The year which ended at Advent 2021 was Year B. These readings complement the Sunday and festival readings: Thursday through Saturday readings help prepare the reader for the Sunday ahead; Monday through Wednesday readings help the reader reflect and digest on what they heard in worship. Verse of the Day for Friday, October 28, 2022

Verse of the Day
Friday, October 28, 2022

1 Peter 1:24-25
For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.” And this is the word that was preached to you.
This quotation is from the Greek version of Isaiah 40:6b–8, a text that in Isaiah refers to human frailty versus the certainty of God’s promise of redemption, using images drawn from the hot desert wind’s withering the vegetation in its path. Peter is not the only New Testament writer to use this passage (cf. James 1:10–11), and it fits well in this context. While their experience of life under persecution might be that “the grass withers and the flowers fall,” it is really their pagan persecutors who “are like grass,” while they have been born of “the word of the Lord [that] stands forever. ” In an insecure world they have security through the power of the gospel.
