The Forward Day by Day Meditation for August 16, 2016

From Forward Day By Day

John 5:39a, 40 (NRSV) [Jesus said] You search the scriptures...yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

Tradition and beliefs die hard. They are very important to us. Yet when is the last time we let Jesus come into the midst of those traditions and beliefs and ask questions about them? When is the last time we held them up to the light of Christ?

American philosopher Eric Hoffer nailed it when he wrote, “In a time of drastic change, it is the learners who inherit the future. The learned find themselves equipped to live only in a world that no longer exists.” This was as true in Jesus’ day as it is true now. How much time and energy do we put into defending and justifying rather than listening and obeying? Are we searching the scriptures to cement our own (learned) belief systems and bolster our own previously held concepts? Or are we learners, open to coming to Jesus to find life?
