The Daily Meditation for May 10, 2016

From Forward Day by Day

Matthew 8:22 But Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

My grandmother had a punchbowl a friend borrowed and never returned. This happened decades ago. Every time she had need of a punch bowl, she brought up the saga of the borrowed but not returned punchbowl…again.

We all have punchbowls in our lives. They may be relationships that didn’t end the way we thought they should. They may be regrets for choices we wish we hadn’t made. They may be situations we couldn’t control to our liking.

Dwelling on them might not be helpful to our spiritual growth. Some things in our lives are dead ends for our emotional and spiritual energy, especially if that energy is spent wondering how we can control others.

Following Jesus means we might need to recognize when something, some event, some relationship has ceased to be life-giving and has moved to a place where God alone can resurrect, where God alone can offer us insight.
